JPG

JPG was developed by an organization called the “Joint Photographic Experts Group” (JPEG), which was formed in 1986. One of its creators was Joan Laverne Mitchell, a computer scientist born on May 24, 1947; she was also a pioneer in data compression and a researcher at IBM.

The format was first introduced in 1990. Because MS-DOS Windows limited file extensions to just three characters, the name JPEG was shortened to JPG.
